Ready all, Row!

This morning at 8:30 under a partly sunny sky, Robin and Sue began their trip. Air temperature was a balmy 64 degrees. Seas were nearly calm. Visibility was at least 20 miles, and we watched them through the binoculars till we could no longer see them. Long range forcast continues good weather with only light winds and slight chnace of rain on Wednesday. That will get them past Dixon Enterance, their first major crossing.

Sue and Robin, planned on getting to at least Mary Island today, a distance of some fifteen miles. Mary Island was the final resting place of the Kayak belonging to Grant Hadwin, the ex-timber scout, turned
ecowarrier/terrorist who cut down the Golden Spruce. Grant left Prince Pupert by kayak on a stormy Feburary 13th 1997 with plans to cross Hecate Straits to return to Seagate, Haida Gwaii to stand trial. He never showed up.Four months later his kayak was found under unusual circumstances on Mary Island, some fifty miles north in the opposite direction. Grant has not been seen since.

The Alaska State Ferry ride to Ketchikan was great with conditions nearly perfect for rowing the entire way. Cape Caution was perfect with only a slight swell. We say a pod of Orcas as we pasted Alert Bay.
